Telecom Giants race to launch 3G

Vietnam’s four telecom providers are in a race to become the country’s first to offer 3G services, following their licensing in early April.

Military-run Viettel, MobiFone, and VinaPhone – both managed by the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), and a consortium between EVN Telecom and Hanoi Telecom, are striving to complete the technical capabilities necessary to supply 3G services to millions of mobile phone users all over the country.

Thanks to its efforts since late 2008, VinaPhone is optimistic about its chances, particularly after the government allowed the company to team up with Gtel Mobile, which closely cooperates with leading foreign partners, such as Ericsson, Alcatel Lucent, IBM and Avaya.

VinaPhone Deputy Director Hoang Trung Hai said the company expects to implement the first 3G service packages by the beginning of the third quarter, with coverage extending to 70% of the population.

If the plan is implemented on schedule, VinaPhone will become the first to provide 3G services in Viet Nam .

Not to accept second place, MobiFone is sparing no expense or effort so as to launch its own 3G services also in the third quarter.

With an investment totaling trillions of VND, Vietnam’s top 2G operator has promised to supply the service to all urban areas throughout the country within the first year, and up to 98 percent of the population in the following three years.

Viettel, behind its leading competitors, plans to launch the service by 2010, and has committed 12.8 trillion VND to the endeavor, the most capital spent by all licensed firms working to attain 3G capability.

Lastly, the EVN Telecom-Hanoi Telecom consortium expects to be offering its own 3G services by the end of this year, with a coverage area of 50% of the population. It has invested around 6 trillion VND into the project.

Industry experts say the introduction of 3G services will not only give operators a chance to enhance their revenues, but also provide millions of mobile users access to various value-added services such as video phone, films and music, chatting, online games, and e-payments at lower rates.

According to the International Telecommunications Union, in recent years Viet Nam has emerged as one of the fastest growing mobile markets in the world.
